The Optimist’s Living Quarters

Why come to this city and not take in the best it has to offer? Beach, sunshine, and warmth. Well, most people have some other specific reason. But I don’t quite, so I better get what I can.

Average plebes will start with Craigslist. Make a few friends in the area and they’ll all tell you WestSide Rentals. Go for a sooo-NOT-LA walk (transporting yourself using your own body rather than a car) and notice For Rent signs and management company placards all over. Scour their websites. They’re usually pretty straightforward and umm, as fair as that kind of thing goes. Padmapper may be the overall winner.

It came down to a well-located, relatively low-priced 1BR in a multi-unit building that seemed like the best, smartest deal. Forgotten factor: This is not our only place. So we have no stuff, but lots of storage elsewhere. If I were looking to live here for real, I would have gone with that practical ol thing. But as a plebe who grasps every twig of fun within reach at every possible moment, desperately, I say we’re going for fun.

Landlords seem to know just the right amount where it’s as much as you feel comfortable paying, and then as much as you feel you comfortably incidentally can pay on top of that because you really like the place, and that’s the rental price, or maybe I’m just the kind of person who could go a long time without eating if I had no one else influencing me to go eat. I’m pretty easily influenced though.

Pet-friendly places aren’t so common here. I mean in NYC they of course all say no pets, but most places actually don’t care. Here, it seems they mean it when they say it.
